Friday Fives: Five SUVs to look out for in the near future

This week’s Friday Fives we count the five ultra-luxury SUVs from brands making their first foray into the 4x4 world.

This week’s Friday Fives we count the five ultra-luxury SUVs from brands making their first foray (or return) into the 4x4 world.

It used to be that SUVs were for off-road adventurers but in this present day, an SUV is a statement of status, well, premium luxury SUVs that is. We have Range Rover, BMW and Mercedes-Benz that started all the premium SUV trend before brands like Audi and most notably the Porsche Cayenne started joining in with the fun.

If you’ve been reading our magazine, you would have heard that Lamborghini has confirmed that they will be building an SUV and they’re not the only brand who has an SUV model in their plans. This week we count the five ultra-premium SUVs that everybody should look forward to in the future.

Lamborghini Urus

If you have thoughts that go along the lines of “Why would Lamborghini plan to build a SUV?” then you should know that this isn’t the first time that Lamborghini is building an SUV. Back in the days Lamborghini was commissioned to build an army truck for World War Two called the LM002, so, think of the Urus as their return to the SUV segment. Welcome back?

Bentley Bentayga

While our UK counterparts have tons of cheeky comments about Bentley’s choice of name for their 2016 SUV, Bentley has high hopes for their SUV representative. The Bentayga is set to go up against the Range Rover with a (rumoured) 6.0-litre petrol engine but all is not set in stone (except for the name) as our counterparts understands that Bentley is looking to install a hybrid engine under the bonnet instead.

Jaguar F-Pace

This is the first time Jaguar is launching a SUV and it’s a huge deal for the blokes at Jaguar and why not? The entry level SUV premium market is going to get shaken (bad) next year because Jaguar has the Porsche Macan firmly in their sights.

Audi Q7 e-tron

Ok, I know the Q7 isn’t a new model but a plug-in hybrid Q7 is. The Q7 will soon come to lucky fuel-conscious owners with the award winning plug-in hybrid electric motor in the A3 Sportback. This SUV is also the closest to launch with registrations opening end of this year. Any bets when the car will make it to Malaysia?

Rolls-Royce Cullinan

Rolls-Royce has finally said that reluctant “yes” to building their very own SUV. Well, the SUV has yet been christened but RR and BMW knows it by its code name Cullinan. Our UK counterparts has extracted a promise that the Cullinan will adopt the aluminium spaceframe architecture distinct to BMW’s X vehicles, all the capabilities of an off-roader and all the luxury that makes it a Rolls. We’re really looking forward to how the Cullinan will look when will launch in 2018!
