New chairman completes top revamp at UMW Toyota Motor

Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Hamad Kama Piah bin Che Othman takes over from Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin

Following the introduction of its new president, Ravindran Kurusamy, UMW Toyota Motor held a corporate shindig to welcome in its new chairman as well, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Hamad Kama Piah bin Che Othman.

The latter was introduced by Akio Takeyama, the deputy chairman of UMW Toyota Motor, at the function held in Kuala Lumpur. Hamad brings with him more than 30 years of experience in the field of unit trust management, investment management and corporate finance during his time at Permodalan Nasional Berhad where he served as the group president and chief executive officer for many years.

Ravindran on the other hand climbed the corporate ladder at UMW Toyota Motor, where he has served for the last 26 years in various divisions in the company. Over the years, he has also built a close rapport with UMW’s joint venture partner, Toyota Motor Corporation.

“Both Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Hamad Kama Piah and Ravindran have vast experience in the industry and I am confident that they will bring to our management team new ideas and new approaches which will benefit the company and take it to greater heights,” said Takeyama.

He also spoke about the outgoing chairman Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin and his contribution, “His vast experience dealing with industries, especially the auto industry, while at MITI was beneficial to our company. With his guidance, we have been able to interact with the government in a more effective way, especially when it concerned policies and other activities which we wished to undertake.” Asmat helmed UMW Group and UMWT since 2001 after retiring from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

Takeyama also spoke about Datuk Ismet Suki, who he said was instrumental in introducing enhancement of facilities at Toyota outlets around the country in order to move customer service to a higher level, “This exercise was undertaken efficiently and systematically as Datuk Ismet has a good sense of planning and provided good ideas which inspired those involved in the work.”

Also present at the cocktail event were Hiroyuki Fukui, managing officer of Toyota Motor Corporation, Badrul Feisal bin Abdul Rahim, president & Group CEO of UMW Holdings Bhd and guests from Toyota Motor Corporation, Toyota Motor Asia Pacific, Toyota affiliates from the Asia Pacific Region, senior government officials, representative from the Embassy of Japan, top management from the media and business partners.
