Toyota Kicks off Airbag Replacement Recall

UMW Toyota Motor starts a Special Service Campaign (SSC) in the Malaysian market to replace faulty airbag inflators for selected models

Worldwide, Toyota Motor Corp (TMC) is already performing recalls to replace the inflator module in the front passenger SRS airbag system. UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has taken steps to ensure Malaysia's Toyota owners are taken care of as well.

Affected models are the Vios, Corolla Altis, Yaris and Alphard that have been manufactured between October 2007 and December 2011. UMWT advices you to contact any authorised Toyota service centre or call their toll-free line If your Toyota vehicle falls within those criterias. UMWT will be notifying owners as the necessary parts arrive so owners can have them replaced in a couple of hours. For free of course.

For those grey import Alphard and Vellfire owners, fret not, if your vehicle sits within the same October 2007 to December 2011 period, you'll be covered too. Toyota is also updating its VIN database so owners can check their car's VIN number at https://toyota.com.my/aftersales-services/special-service-campaigns.

Shedding some light on the actual defect, it is due to propellant degradation that occurs after prolonged exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures and high temperature cycling. Something we have to worry about in Malaysia's weather. In this event, the inflator modules may rupture causing the occupants to be impaled by metal fragments as the airbag inflates.

It's safe to say the motor industry, especially the major Japanese car makers, has been affected quite badly with these huge scale recalls regarding Takata Airbags.  Not to mention the trust on the brand name and products.
