Mercedes-Benz Malaysia expands SUV line-up with the GLC Coupe, GLS and G-Class

The introduction of two new models and a fresh facelift completes Mercedes’s SUV range in Malaysia

Further establishing their claim as the leader in the premium SUV segment in Malaysia, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia proudly unveils three new luxury SUV models for the Malaysian market. Making their local debut are the GLC Coupe and the GLS, while the G-Class gets a fresh facelift to maintain its stance as the Godfather amongst all SUVs.

“Combining ultimate driving comfort, dynamic handling and great agility, our SUVs are here to define a new best class, break conventions and provide our customers with the vehicle to make a statement,” said Mark Raine, Vice President, Sales & Marketing Passenger Cars, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.

The sportier looking among the three due to its sleek lines of a coupe is the GLC Coupe. The Coupe is Mercedes’ premium mid-sized SUV that embodies the next generation of Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The sportiness of its body is further amplified with the AMG Line, which meant that the exterior of the GLC Coupe is dressed up with the AMG styling, diamond radiator grille, and the 20-inch AMG light alloy wheels.

On the inside, the GLC Coupe gets seats covered in ARTICO leather and more AMG goodies such as the AMG sports pedals, floor mats with embroidered ‘AMG’ lettering, and a flat-bottom AMG sports steering wheel. The GLC Coupe also comes with the LED Intelligent Light System, providing ideal visibility in all weather conditions.

Underneath the hood lies a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged power unit pushing out 205bhp at 5500rpm and 350Nm of torque at 1200-1400rpm. Mated to a 9G-TRONIC PLUS 9-speed automatic, the GLC Coupe is able to nail down a 0-100kph acceleration in 7.3 seconds and will keep on climbing until it hits the top speed of 250kph.
Up next is what Mercedes describes as the S-Class among SUVs; the GLS. Almost the total opposite from the GLC Coupe, the GLS has ample space to comfortably accommodate seven and still has space up to 2300-litres in the boot, providing unparalleled levels of comfort, agile dynamics and best in class safety.

Welcoming its occupants into the cabin are fine quality materials and finishes, and new techs like Apple CarPlay and the Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround system keeps them entertained throughout the journey. The latest AIRMATIC air suspension with enhanced damping system ADS is also equipped on the GLS to provide a comfortable ride.

Though labelled as an S-Class of SUVs, the GLS 400 still looks tough from the outside especially with the AMG Line trim where it gets specific front and rear aprons, side running boards, colour-matching side flaps and the massive 21-inch AMG light-alloy wheels. But exclusivity does not stop there as the Night package is available to take it a step further in conjunction with this design and equipment line.

Powering the GLS is a beefier 3.0-liter V6 biturbo engine that churns out a healthy 324bhp at 5250-6000rpm and 480Nm of torque at 1600-4000rpm. Also, mated to the 9G-TRONIC 9-speed auto, do not think that the GLS does not have the legs to move fast as it can reach 100kph from a standstill in just 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 240kph.
Finally, we have reached to the one that started it all. Making its maiden appearance back in 1979, the G-Class had undergone an amazing evolution from being a vehicle used primarily as an off-roader into a luxurious cross-country vehicle. Even so, the G-Class is instantly recognisable from its timeless and unmistakable design which makes it one of the most memorable SUVs around.

Although the design is generally the same, the G-Class had received a series of upgrades to keep its outlook updated and fresh. The new G-Class gets AMG radiator grille with dual lamellae and four chrome inserts, prominent bumpers with large air intakes, fender flares and optional stainless steel running boards.

The top speed on this beast might not be as impressive as the GLC Coupe and GLS at 210kph, but the Mercedes-AMG G 63 does not fool around with its 5.5-liter biturbo V8 paired to an AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC. With 555bhp and a towering 760Nm of torque at 1750-5250rpm in its disposal, 0-100kph is dealt with in only 5.4 seconds and a pair of red brake calipers slotted behind the 21-inch AMG forged wheels are there to bring the G 63 into a halt when needed.

The new GLC 250 Coupe comes at a price of RM 423,888, GLS 400 from RM 888,888 and RM 1,181,888 for the G 63 AMG. All prices quoted are OTR without insurance, inclusive of GST.
