​Mercedes-Benz GLC, now assembled in Pekan

First Merc SUV assembled in Pekan, priced lower and has more equipment. Hooray?


Just a short seven after its launch, the X3-rival Mercedes-Benz GLC 250 has just begun their assembly activities in the Pekan plant. A total investment of RM13million was needed to get the plant ready for such task because the GLC brings a few firsts to the plant that have so far only assembled the saloon models. The GLC will be the first Mercedes-Benz SUV, the first 9G Tronic gearbox and the first 4MATIC vehicle to be put together in the factory.

It’s good to note that the GLC you see on screen is a Semi Knock-Down and not a Complete Knock-Down vehicle. The body panels come welded and painted before getting packed and shipped to Pekan. The job for the plant here is to put together the parts to make a whole car. MBM plans to start the GLC’s CKD program once the new paint shop in the plant is up and running.

Those expecting a generous drop in price will be disappointed; there is only an RM3000 gap between the CBU and the SKD model. Tentative price for one is RM325,888, which is slightly lower than the old price of RM328,888. But to make the deal sweeter, MBM has added a few nifty things to the SKD model that the CBU doesn’t have.
 
The GLC you see on screen comes with the Touchpad with Controller, ambient lighting, the stowage space package that offers additional nooks to put things and brushed aluminium door sill with its ‘Mercedes-Benz’ logotype illuminated. 

Cosmetically, you won’t be able to tell the difference between the imported and the locally-assembled models. The GLC is still clothed with AMG styling and 20-inch wheels shod with Pirelli Scorpions. The GLC 250 is powered by the same 2.0-litre turbocharged that produces 211bhp at 5500rpm and 350Nm at 1200-4000rpm. 

Customers can expect to have their GLCs shortly, there are more than just a few units completely done up. You can expect yours in a month’s time.
