Mazda CX-9 slated for mid-2017 launch

Seven-seater SUV estimated to be priced at RM250,000

Mazda’s flagship SUV, the CX-9, is one handsome hunk of metal, and if Bermaz Motor; the local guardian of the Mazda marque, has its way, you’ll be able to buy the seven-seater SUV in the middle of 2017 for somewhere around RM250,000 if they get their way.

Dato Sri Ben Yeoh, the managing director of Bermaz, disclosed that there are already a handful of units roaming the streets of Malaysia for evaluation purposes and a mid-2017 launch is the goal.

The all-new second generation CX-9 adopts the brand’s proprietary SkyActiv technology with a turbocharged 2.5-litre inline-four that delivers 250bhp and a whopping 420Nm of torque to either the front wheels or all four wheels via a six-speed automatic.

Forced induction on a smaller displacement engine also helps lessen the operating costs with lower road tax and insurance fees  over its predecessor’s massive and unnecessary 3.7-litre V6. Furthermore, the SkyActiv engine incorporates a Dynamic Pressure Turbo that allows for high-boost pressure of 1.2-bars from low in the power band at just 1600rpm to almost completely reduce lag.

To put this in context, the sublime 2.2-litre SkyActiv-D engines in the Mazda 6 and CX-5 diesel also produce 420Nm of torque but it kicks in later at 2000rpm.

Similarly to the CX-5, the CX-9 will be available in both 2WD and 4WD variants with identical equipment count between the duo.

Being its flagship SUV, the CX-9 will be offered with some premium features such as LED headlights and taillights, remote-operated tailgate, triple-zone climate control, power-adjustable front seats, keyless entry and push-start, heads-up display, MZD Connect with an 8.0-inch touchscreen, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, 20-inch wheels, six airbags, blind spot-monitoring and autonomous emergency braking.
