There’s nothing more unique than the Ioniq

Here comes Hyundai’s first ever hybrid!

Hard to believe that just a year ago Hyundai made waves in the industry by introducing a set of cars that were specifically designed with fuel efficiency in mind. The brand new Ioniq comes in a form of three ranges; a hybrid, plug-in hybrid and an electric car.

Fast forward a year and Hyundai Sime Darby Motors is proud to present to us the Ioniq in the metal. Only the hybrid version, of course, they know full well that our country is still not advanced enough for the plug-in hybrid and electric car yet. And the best part of the Ioniq is the very attractive price that Hyundai is offering.

With a starting price of RM100,328, you can get your hands on the base Hyundai Ioniq variant, the HEV. Fork out RM10,500 more, at RM110,828, and you can be the proud owner of the top of the line variant, the HEV Plus. There are huge differences between the two, most notable of all are the absence of the numerous safety features available on the HEV Plus.

Not only does the Ioniq come with a good price, it also comes with a complete package of warranties. So not only does the car come with the standard five-year or 300,000km warranty, it also comes with an eight-year unlimited mileage warranty for the battery; this also means that the battery will cost less than RM10,000 should there be a need to replace it, three years or 60,000km of free service and a three-year long Guaranteed Auto Protection Insurance that will see the owner fully reimbursed with the full price if ever their Ioniq is declared a total loss.

With the Ioniq, the key to keeping fuel consumption low is to keep things lightweight and flowy. Testament to that, Hyundai has installed items like active air flap, front wheel air curtains, floor undercover to name a few. The wheel rims are also specially designed to help with airflow as well! To keep things lightweight, Hyundai made use of aluminium on the hood and tailgate.

For the interior, Hyundai has made sure to keep up with the clutter-free theme. Every detail has been specifically thought out to give occupants a logical, structured approach, especially for the control buttons. Hyundai is also proud to say that the materials in the interior are made from eco-friendly materials, looks like Hyundai has really planned out the Ioniq to be the earth’s favourite car!

Power comes from a new Kappa 1.6 Atkinson GDI four-cylinder engine that was specifically designed for the Ioniq trio, the engine produces 104bhp at 5700rpm and 147Nm of torque at 4000rpm. The combustion engine is further helped by the electric motor that produces 43bhp more so that in total the Ioniq has a combined output of 139bhp and 265Nm of torque.

The Kappa engine is linked to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission which Hyundai claims boasts best in class transfer efficiency through low-bearings and low-viscosity transmission oil. This will ensure that the Ioniq does not have the laggy acceleration that plagues most fuel efficient cars. There are also two modes drivers can choose from and that is Eco and Sport.

If you have your eye on the high spec HEV Plus, then you will be able to enjoy the full range of safety equipment like Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. There is also Lane Departure Warning System and the Lane Keeping Assist System as well. ABS with EBD comes as standard but there is also Autonomous Emergency Braking to help save you from accidents by applying brakes before the moment of collision.

All in all, the Ioniq comes with everything you can ask from in a premium car in a very attractive package and a very attractive price. Now all that remains is to drive it!
