The same weekend that the Formula 1 paddock arrived in SIC for the Malaysia Grand Prix was also the start of the Malaysian Championship Series 2015. The Proton R3 team once again returned to the grid with a Proton Suprima S and a Proton Preve.

Despite having bad qualifying results which saw both Protons starting from the back of the grid, both drivers ended Race 1 on top of the podium. Fariqe Hairuman drove the No.11 Proton Suprima S to finish on top of the podium while team mate Syafiq Ali in the No.12 Proton Preve drove home with a solid third place finish.

On Sunday, James Veerapen took over the seat of the No.11 Proton Suprima S. Veerapen started on pole for the MTC class while team mate Syafiq Ali started third in the No.12 Proton Preve. The Suprima S had a bad start but Veerapen worked his way through the traffic to retake the lead with Syafiq Ali following close behind in second place. Race 2 was ended prematurely due to a collision between two Renault Clios from the Clio Cup China Series, thus giving the Proton R3 team a one-two finish.

The first race marks Fariqe Hairuman’s return to racing after a one year hiatus from the international motorsports scene. He and James Veerapen will be the drivers to lead the team in the 2015 season. Round 2 of the MCS will be held on 24-26 April in SIC.
