The 2016 GT Asia title is Bentley Team Absolute’s to claim

Shanghai-based racing outfit retains GT Asia title with their three Continental GT3s but narrowly misses the drivers’ title

Putting on a strong show with 13 podiums in the bag, Bentley Team Absolute marched into the final round of the 12-race GT Asia series with high hopes in securing the title win and the drivers’ title as well. And the journey to the top started off in a positive note for them as Duncan Tappy recorded the fastest ever GT3 lap during the first practice session at the China GT.

But winning or even finishing the race was not an easy feat as rain poured down onto the Shanghai International Circuit, turning the 5.541km track into a slippery ice rink. The race was both exciting and treacherous at the same time as several title-contenders were taken out of the running due to the horrible weather. Luckily for Bentley Team Absolute, the team already had the title secured even before the final showdown following a second place finish in race one.

With the team title secured, the responsibility of bringing home the drivers’ title was up to Adderly Fong (HK) and Andrew Kim (KO). Unfortunately, despite a clean and strong race in the rain from both of them, 2016 does not seem to be the year for them to bring home the drivers’ s title as well.

“It was a tough weekend in the wet and although we narrowly missed out on the drivers’ title, we are delighted to, once again, win the teams’ trophy,” said Bentley Team Absolute team principal Ingo Matter.

“Congratulations to everyone at Bentley Team Absolute for taking yet another championship title for the Continental GT3. Since partnering with the team, we have been extremely impressed and we look forward to growing with them in Asia to help them drive forward GT3 racing in the region,” commented Brian Gush, Bentley’s director of motorsport.

The team now shifts their focus to the Asian Le Mans Series taking place on the 28-30 October at Zhuhai International Circuit.
