Discussion: New elimination system in F1 Qualifying

The F1 Commission has designed a new way of determining the grid for the sport.

The F1 Qualifying system that we have come to know the past ten years is about to receive a slight revamp following a meeting of the F1 Commission held in Geneva. The exact structure and date of the new system’s introduction will be decided when the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council meets up for a vote next week, if all goes well, we will have a new system to understand all over again.

At the moment, the new qualifying format will see the slowest drivers eliminated before the end of the session. So the system will still see three separate qualifying segments to decide the grid but elimination will start six minutes into each session instead of determining the results at the end of it.

So the format is this:

Q1 will be 16 minutes long – the first elimination will happen SEVEN minutes into the session – every ONE MINUTE 30 SECOND will see the slowest driver eliminated until the chequered flag is waved

Seven drivers will be eliminated in the session and 15 will progress to Q2

Q2 will be 15 minutes – first elimination will happen SIX minutes into the session – every ONE MINUTE 30 SECOND will see the slowest driver eliminated until the chequered flag is waved
The session will see another seven drivers eliminated while eight will continue to Q3

Q3 is now 14 minutes long – FIVE minutes to determine the slowest driver – elimination will happens every ONE MINUTE 30 SECOND thereafter until the chequered flag
Two drivers will be left in the final one minute 30 second to determine who will take pole position.

Final elimination will occur when the chequered flag is waved rather than when the time is up for each session.

The new system sounds very challenging for the teams but we won’t know yet how well the system will work other than sending our brains into a round in the washing machine. We’re going to have to see it to understand it better. Tell us what do you think about this newest system!
